The Galleria Umberto

The Galleria Umberto I was built between 1887 and 1891, named after King Umberto I of Italy. The cruciform plan and cast-iron and glass dome make it one of the finest covered galleries in Europe.

Standing in the centre and looking straight up is the obvious shot — but it rewards patience. Wait for the light to shift as clouds pass over the glass and the whole space transforms.
