Amsterdam in spring is something else. The tulips are still going, the canals are glassy on the right morning, and the city feels a little more manageable when the summer crowds haven’t yet arrived.

We based ourselves in the Jordaan, which made for easy morning walks before the tourist traffic picked up. The light at around 7am was exceptional — long shadows and golden tones bouncing off the canal water.

The Rijksmuseum gardens were a highlight — free to enter, and the roses were just starting to come through alongside the last of the tulips.
